I know it seems like I don't care but something in me does I swear

While lecturing today, one of my students knocked an entire pile of books onto the floor. It was a distraction, but I didn't think much of it. Then another student did the same thing about ten minutes later.

When it happened the second time I stopped lecturing and said, "Am I really that boring today? Everybody seems to be falling asleep and knocking things over."

The first student approached me after class and said, "It's not that you're boring, it's just that I'm narcoleptic and they've just changed my medication again."

Fabulous. Another instance in which I've unwittingly mocked someone for a condition they have no control over.

Aren't narcoleptic episodes typically triggered by stress and anxiety? I think your problem is that you're harshing this guy's mellow.

This reminds me of a birthday party I went to for a friend of mine who turned 5 3 weeks ago. He had a pirate party, complete with a pirate magician. An uncle of my friend (who is my age) was diagnosed with sarcoma a few months back and has since had his leg amputated and is wearing an aluminum prosthesis. Anyway, the magician was making balloon animals for the kids, one of which was a “weenie dog.” A little while later the weenie dog popped, and the magician, right in front of the uncle, said “ooops, it had a bad leg. We had to put it down.” The uncle looked at him and replied “good thing I’m not a dog!”

Yeah, it was awkward.

get a doctors note - Narcolepsy is very rare - betting it is a cover story and a strategy to go on the offensive truthfully your student probably just fell asleep and the way kids are today always making excuses for everything this was the best they could come up with.

I had the same thought as Bill from Gainesville.
