I'm trying to convince Mr M that he needs to learn how to read, but he's not buying any of it.
Me: Why don't you want to learn how to read?
Mr M: It's boring. You just sit there and don't do anything.
Me: But it doesn't have to be boring. You just have to read about things you like.
Mr M: I don't like anything.
Me: You like monsters don't you?
Mr M: Yeah.
Me: Well, why don't you try to read books about monsters?
Mr M: Because, you can't ever tell if they have monsters in them or not.
Another time:
Mr M: I like Spiderman.
Me: I know you do. You know, there are books about Spiderman. Would you like to read something like that?
Mr M: No. I just like to look at pictures.
Today I was driving with my kids, and I started trying to convince him that he was very close to being able to read. He can sound out all the letters, he just struggles trying to put them all together. Then Togers decided to jump into the conversation.
Togers: The word is antiestablishmentarianism. Get it right next time!
Maybe I've found the root of the problem.

I'll bet his Grandma Inklings could suggest a book about monsters that he'd be interested in and would be easy enough to read. Either her or Amber. Just buy the books, lay them around and eventually he'll read.
Maybe he should read just to get competitive with Togers. You could pit them against each other . . . Obviously I don't have kids.

i learned how to read by reading the sunday comics -- maybe he will start loving looking at the spiderman and it will just flow for him from there.
Oh come on! Antestablishmentarianism isn't THAT difficult of a word to sound out.
I don't remember how old he is, but the LeapFrog videos Letter Factory and Word Factory are supposed to be good. I have both of them, but we've only watched Letter Factory with Clive thus far. It sounds like Mr M might benefit from the Word Factory one...it's supposed to explain and give lots of examples of how to put the sounds together. Just a thought...
